A Context Assessment - Mozambique

For Agriculture & Livestock development
in Dombe\Nhamatanda

JV-Consultancies (JVC) conducted this assignment for Dorcas-Mozambique during a 3-weeks period in July 2019, whereby the impact of the cyclone Idai in March 2019 was investigated and the possibilities for Dorcas to start an Agricultural Programme from October 2019 onwards.

JVC was hereby pleasantly surprised that in both areas many farmer groups were already present with which Dorcas could work: Dombe 23x, Nhamatanda 60x! They grow under rainfed agriculture as staple crops: maize, sorghum, manioc, sweet potato & bananas; as cash crops: sesame, cowpea, groundnuts, green beans & cashew nut.
Vegetable growing done via furrow irrigation nearby the riversides were: tomatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, green peppers, lettuce, bush beans, okra, eggplant, consumption potatoes. Although vegetables were sold to middlemen, who made a high profit(!), the production & marketing of vegetables should be improved. Unfortunately, there was not yet any processing of vegetables within both areas.
Livestock rearing included: chickens, goats, pigs, bulls & a little bit fish.

Having identified the needs and potential to re-build and build up agriculture and livestock, incl. potential stakeholders (e.g. re-establishing these 83 associations, 21 communities & 2 resettlement camps), JVC has written a concise consultancy report that outlines opportunities and challenges to promote inclusive value chain development in the selected sectors and geographies, and which provides a strategic plan for a 5-yr agricultural programme.

However, therefore funds will have to be sought and proposals written so that Dorcas-Mozambique's Agricultural Programme for at least 5-6 years can already start in 2019. Hereby JVC has assisted Dorcas-IO to develop a Concept Note for RVO-SDGP funding in The Netherlands, which was unfortunately not rewarded!
